The working principle of the gantry planer mainly includes the planing process and motion forms.
The gantry planer is mainly used for planing large workpieces, with the worktable moving the workpiece through the gantry frame in a linear reciprocating motion, where the idle stroke speed is greater than the working stroke speed. Generally, there are two vertical tool holders mounted on the crossbeam, and the tool holder sliding seat can rotate at an angle in the vertical plane and can move laterally along the crossbeam. The planing process is the relative motion between the workpiece and the planer knife, with the worktable frequently moving back and forth, which can be divided into manual point operation and automatic reciprocating cycle operation.
The structure and motion forms of the gantry planer include main motion, feed motion, and auxiliary motion. The main motion is the linear reciprocating motion of the workpiece fixed on the worktable; the feed motion is the displacement of the knife perpendicular to the main motion during each double stroke; auxiliary motion includes the clamping, releasing, and lifting movements of the crossbeam, as well as the lifting of the tool holder.
The control system of modern gantry planers uses VVVF (Variable Voltage Variable Frequency) inverters and AC motors to form a closed-loop speed control system to cope with load fluctuations and power grid fluctuations, ensuring stable operation of the planer. The motor is controlled by commands from a PLC (Programmable Logic Controller) to achieve control of various different speeds of the worktable and back-and-forth direction changes. Core components are controlled by the PLC, which automatically or manually controls the tracking status of the inverter, tool holder, crossbeam, and grinding head according to the instructions from the operation station and on-site signals, following a pre-programmed procedure.
Through these working principles and structural characteristics, the gantry planer can efficiently complete the processing tasks of large workpieces.
